Pl. someone explain what the purpose of this program *msninst.exe* is?
I'm wondering if I really need it.

For example, connected with this worm:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.kuskus.worm.html
Have you scanned your machine?

It can't be a worm, you know? I have this new comp' and on its desktop
there's a shortcut to "C:\Program Files\MSN\MsnInstaller\msninst.exe".
What's this installer for? I'd love to know Smile

it's still potentialy a virus, it's not hard to make one program seem like another, and the fact that your computer is "new" dosnt change the fact that it's still potentialy a virus.

Appears to be the name of the installer for software used with the MSN
internet service. A search on google turns up a links to a few microsoft
links that show that filename a file included with various versions of
Windows.

Most likely the one on your desktop was provided by the OEM as a
convenience. If you did not already have an ISP, MSN might be something you
would want to install and try. Windows does not need this program to run.
In fact, you can use just Internet Explorer with an MSN account if you
prefer.

Completely different but goes by the same name: As others have posted, this
is also one of the file names used by worm. It's not unusual to see worms
and other malware masquerade with familiar names.

The MSNINST.EXE located in that folder would be the installed for MSN
Premium (http://join.msn.com/).

Grateful for the clarification, Sharon - and thanks to everyone else.
I might well go ahead and uninstall this *installer* I don't need.
