You don't need to worry about this if all you're doing is buying a PCI USB
controller. Just get one that has the features you want. They are really
inexpensive. But if you want to worry about it - it's your energy, after
all - then go to your motherboard mftr.'s website and get all the specs
for that board.

The numerical version of PCI can be important if the card maker specifies
some minimum numerical version of PCI of the motherboard for installation.
Mine, for instance is version 2.3. As noted in my motherboard manual.

I'm not talking about PCI-E, PCI-X, or the newer version DSS. Strictly
conventional, original PCI.

Unless your PC is terribly dated, its doubtful that you have anything less
than 2.2 version. Most likely, 2.3.
