Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

If you are using cd-r disc you can only write onto it once, which means any
unused space is no longer available, plus as it is a cd-r filenames cannot be
changed nor can any file be deleted.

However, if the disc is a cd-rw you can write on to the disc as many times
as you like, but if you wish to change the filenames or delete any file, you
have to delete ALL the files in one go, then restore those you don't want
deleted (so keep a back-up copy somewhere else?). Maybe with some particular
brand of disc writing application you might be able to change filenames or
delete files individually but using "Roxio Easy Media Creator 7, the digital
media suite" I found this only worked once on a particular cd-rw disc - I
never changed any settings in the program, it just didn't work the first few
times I tried it, then it worked once, then stopped working again, and have
never manged to figure out why.

The 'speed' of the drive should also mathch the 'speed' quoted on the
packaging that the discs are in. Or at least that was what I was told when I
asked an 'expert'.

If your optical disc drive is a dvd writer which can support writing files
onto DVD-Ram (they are called 'supermulti drives'), then I have been told
that these dvd-ram discs allow multiple 'writes' and 'rewrites' of any
number, rather than 'all files' and you can also individually change the
filenames, as well as delete them individually.

Hope this helps and good luck
