By golly, you DID help me solve the problem, in an indirect way. You did it
by reminding me of my laptop. Because I had had the same problem with the
laptop. And I finally remembered what had happened.
It was the screensaver.
Every time the screensaver went into action, it threw the computer into
standby.
I removed all screensavers, and then the power settings worked like they
should have.
There may be a way to have a screensaver that doesn't through the system
into standby (and I'd be happy to hear about it), but in any case by
removing it I "solved" my problem.
