I just installed XP pro on my new machine. Works fine.

But after X minutes (I haven't timed it) of inactivity, it goes into
standby. Then I have to type my password to get back in. That's fine, that's
the way it works ...

But now I'd like to set it to "Never go into standby." And I've tried to do
that.

I've gone into Power Options and tried everything. But no matter what I do,
it seems to make no difference at all. It just behaves as before, after X
minutes of inactivity going into standby.

I'm trying to figure out why I can't set it to "Never go into standby." Any
suggestions here?

Thanks,

John

Is this by chance a laptop? If so, did you install all the "stuff" that
comes with them? Often the laptop manufacturer's will install software that
will take over the power settings and prevent the XP one's from working.

John,

As a matter of fact, it's a desktop, with a "clean" installation I made of
XP.

But who knows, maybe there *is* some other software or gadget in there
interfering. I'll check it out.

Thanks,

John

John -

By golly, you DID help me solve the problem, in an indirect way. You did it
by reminding me of my laptop. Because I had had the same problem with the
laptop. And I finally remembered what had happened.

It was the screensaver.

Every time the screensaver went into action, it threw the computer into
standby.

I removed all screensavers, and then the power settings worked like they
should have.

There may be a way to have a screensaver that doesn't through the system
into standby (and I'd be happy to hear about it), but in any case by
removing it I "solved" my problem.

So thanks!

John
