Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

For years, whenever I'm connected to the internet (and only when I'm
connected, not when I'm not connected), I've been getting a grey box pop up,
with a blue bar at the top titled "Messenger Service" with warnings such as
this one, for example;

"Message from FROM to TO on 14/12/2006 2:20:42 AM

STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.

Windows has found 55 Critical System Errors.

To fix the errors please do the following:

1. Download Registry Update from: www.helpfixpc.com
2. Install Registry Update
3. Run Registry Update
4. Reboot your computer

FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO SYSTEM FAILURE!"

These warnings vary in size and instructions, and pop up randomly. Now, I've
never followed the instructions because I'm positive they're phony and it's
just a virus or something. But my questions is...

HOW DO I GET RID OF IT???

I've been closing these windows for years, trying to ignore them, but now I
need someone to help me, it's just too much, please! I've tried running all
sorts of anti virus and spyware software, and even formating/reformating my
computer doesn't help!

When it pops up, and I press ctl alt dlt, and go to the process, it is
listed a a SYSTEM process called csrss.exe

Please send detailed instructions on how to get rid of this annoying thing!
Help will be greatly appreciated!

You are getting hit with Broadcast Messages but out by 'annoying' spaming
websites.

1. Start | Run ... SERVICES.MSC
2. Locate Messenger service in list
3. Right click on name, change type to Disabled. CLick Apply. If
messenger shows Started, click on Stop button and click OK.

Now connect ... no more Broadcast Messages.

Thanks for the replies.

I was also just wondering out of curiosity, are these messages harmful to my
computer in any other way apart from just being annoying? For example, does
it mean a hacker has access to my computer, or every time I close the pop up
window, information about my computer gets sent out? Or is it just simply
relatively harmless messages which do nothing unless I actually visit the
website they are trying to get me to visit? It's just a little alarming,
because each time the message comes up, it comes with the actual time and
date, which gives the impression of something more... I don't know...
'clever'.

Thanks.

.... in other words, is it something I should be worried about, or something
common which most computers get? I mean, for example, i don't understand why
even after formating, it hasn't wiped it away.

Formating has nothing to do with the problem. MS has a Service, Messenger,
that listens on the network on a certain port. When data comes in on that
port, the Messenger service broadcasts it on the PC to all users logged.

Did you read the MS article previously mentioned?

You've quoted nothing of what you said before, and I no longer have your old
message on view here. So I have no idea what your problem is, or whether you
should worry about it.
