system process terminated unexpectedly with status 0x0000... system was
shutdown"-.*

I just encountered this exact problem also. XP has been loaded for some
time, but since it is a little used compter, I brought it up tonight and
updated XP and now I am having the same problem. On boot it gets to the
point that the next thing should be the log in screen, but always reboots.
Any ideas, short of a format an XP reinstall?

Ah! I just installed a new printer and have been chasing my tail with this problem too. Now you seem to have identified a diferent culprit. I recall seeing something like this so await the reply with interest.

Further to the above, I got the blue screen of death but all I saw was the briefest flash before the boot sequence restarted.

The boot sequence then cycles through the menu choices for Safe Mode etc before automatically (if I don't intervene) restarting in normal mode. The cycle then repeats.

Well that was on Saturday. This morning my computer will not even display the BIOS screen nor can I hear the POST. All that happens is the drive lights come on in turn and then go out leaving just the power lamp on.

Any ideas please to help any of us?

Metalhead.

Good news, bad news.

Good news, I fixed it.

Bad news, I cant't remember how and that computer has just lost its backlite so has been relegated to a harddrive backup on the network.

try booting with your xp disc and choose the recovery console, select your windows installation (normally default #1) and at the command prompt type chkdsk /r and hit enter
