Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories. Do you see an icon for Windows
Explorer?

If not:

Right-click on your desktop and select New > Shortcut.
Type this in the box: c:\windows\explorer.exe
Click on Next.
Name the shortcut Windows Explorer.
Click on Finish.

Firstly, I dought you lost it, more likly windows lost it since it dose have suicidal tendencies.

Secondly, try this: Open task manager (etiehr by ctrl+shift+esc or ctrl+alt+del) of then run dialog (file > run) and type explorer.

"WinKey+E"
If explorer isn't running that won't work, that is an explorer hot key.

Is it possible to stop the expanding of the folder when selected? That
is, not show it's subfolders in the left pane?
