Post subject: wireless internet for laptop

hello to all,
I have a toshiba satellite laptop purchased about a year ago, and have yet to connect to the internet via wireless connection. In places where a wireless connection is present my computer does recognize it and connects me. It will say connection at 54mbps, connection is good, bad etc. However I still can't get on the internet.... I get a "page cannot be displayed" everytime no matter where I connect to wireless. I suspect that my internet settings have not been properly set up, along with a valid Interent Protocol for my wireless. I would like to have one set up for my wireless along with my existing dsl connection. If someone could give me a quick rundown or a detailed list that I could use to accomplish this, that would be awesome.....

Does your DSL connection use a USB modem ? If so, then IE will expect a dial
up connection via the USB modem. If you change IE settings to connect via
the LAN then your problem should disappear. In IE, click Tools, Internet
Options. Click the Connections tab and select Never Dial a Connection. Get
rid of the USB modem and get yourself a DSL router that connects to your
laptop via ethernet. You'll never have to configure IE again.

Better still, download Firefox - it doesn't need the tweaks mentioned
above and is a bet browser anyway.

Depends on who/what/where you're connected to.
If they require a wep or wpa key ... that's exactly what my router will tell
you. You have the wireless radio connected ok but until you give it the
proper security key to connect will not let you onto the internet. It may
let you onto the local network depending on the router and its settings.

When wirelessly connected you might try opening a cmd window and typing in
ipconfig /all and see if there is a Gateway address, another words the local
LAN ip# and then see if your browser will connect to it... probably will ask
for a login / password .,,, or you can ping it .. then you know you're
connected fine, but you are not authorized to use that connection.

Ask the owner of the AccessPoint if you can use his connection, see what he
says .
