Post subject: Help? Win95 & WinXP with router - network setup?? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win95>networking (more info?)

Hi all,
I'm having a problem with establishing a network connection between Win95 &
WinXP, in combination with a router and I hope folks in this newsgroup can
help me out with this?? I've been at it for about a week now and I can't
seem to take the last few steps to set this up correctly. Allow me to
provide some details on the situation...
Last week, I've bought myself a router, so that I could share my interet
connection between my 'ole & faithful' Win95 computer and the new XP PC. The
router is a Sweex model, with 1 WAN entry & 4 LAN outlets. The internet
connection took only a moment & it truly works like a charm, but then I read
in the manual, that you could also use it to set up a small network between
the connected PC's. I've been wrestling since... ;-D
I noticed some comments on the topic made here en in articles on the web -
so I went and removed the Client for Netware & the IPX/SPX and NetBEUI
protocols, that were installed on the Win95 PC. (After which I verified that
the internet connection for both the modem dial-up line & LAN connection
still worked correctly - which they did. As a bonus, removing the old
protocols gave me an approx. 10% memory saving on this PC).
What I left on the Win95 PC, were the Adapter-drivers for the network-card &
modem, TCP/IP protocol for both, Client for Microsoft networks and File &
Printer sharing (activated). I've set the "D:"-drive up as a shared
resource, no password.
On the WinXP PC, I activated a Wizard to setup the network: it activated
File & Printer sharing, it set the firewall up to allow file & printer
sharing as an exception and checked a few other items. TCP/IP & Client for
MS network were already present. I set up a data folder as shared resource.
Unfortunately, the result of the above is, that the PC's can NOT access each
other's shared resources. The Win95 pc can't even see it's own shared
resources. HOWEVER.... Strange things are happening, that I can't really
understand?
- 1) When I take the ping command and ping the IP-address of router, Win95 &
WinXP pc's, they all respond correctly.
- 2) Command "net view \\ip-address" on WinXP, reports the shared
resources - for both WinXP as well as the Win95 system.
- 3) Command "net view \\ip-address" on Win95, reports the shared resources
for Win95 system ONLY. The command, issued with the IP-address for the WinXP
system issues an error 53 (the errormessage is in Dutch, but it would
translate to "Can't find computername in network").
AFTER executing the above "net view" commands, the WinXP system is suddenly
able to access the shared drive on the Win95 PC, but the Win95 PC still
can't see or access the shared folder of the WinXP pc. This one-way
connection is unstable, however. If a "demanding" program is run on the
Win95 pc, the network connection can drop off just like that (re-issuing the
command then brings it back on).
I then added both the (router generated) IP addresses & their related names,
into the HOSTS file on both systems - hoping that might do the trick - but
that didn't change things either.
The TCP/IP protocols on both systems need to be setup to get their IP
addresses automatically. If I change that and enter the configured addresses
manually into the appropriate field in the protocol's tab-page and reboot
afterwards, the internet connection is gone. (This is consistent with the
documentation of my current provider, by the way - I just thought I'd give
it a try anyway).
What else is there, that I can try to connect these PC's?
I'd appreciate your suggestions & help!
Thanks & best regards,
Harry Doldersum.

Further developments.....
Have not yet been able to establish contact from the Win95 to the WinXP pc
as yet, but did try a few more things:
- Activated NetBios over TCP/IP on the WinXP pc (was already activated on
the Win95 system). - No improvement.
- Switched off the WinXP firewall and tried to connect, but to no evail.
Error 53 remains. (Switched firewall back on. The firewall settings also
indicated that access would be granted, I just thought I'd verify and make
sure).
Error 53 indicates that the PC can't be found on the network. I think that's
where the problem is - but how to solve it??
Please help me with this one, folks!!
Best regards,
Harry D.

i have a network of win98, win95 and winxp together. It has been awhile
that i installed it. I remeber i downloaded an application to enable
winxp to use netbeui to communicate between the computers. The advantage
should be that the network cannot be accessed from outside.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Help? Win95 & WinXP with router - network setup?? |

Thanks for your reply, I do appreciate it! Meanwhile, I had tried the
NetBEUI protocol - unfortunately, adding it to the installation it kills my
internet connection over the router. Since internet access takes a higher
priority than an internal network, I had to decide to switch things back to
TCP/IP only again...
In this newsgroup, a MS representative stated explicitely that this would be
able to work with TCP/IP - I'm hoping, that someone who knows about those
things will be able to jump in here and provide that "missing link". I think
that I'm overlooking some silly little detail, but I really can't find it.
Thanks for your reply!
Best regards,
Harry D.

Still it works fine with me, so i try again. tcp/ip is the normal
protocol for windows. Netbeui (apple) is a non-routable protocol,
computers that are not located on the same network segment or subnet
cannot communicate.
If you use netbeui, you have to check "client for Microsoft Networks"
and "file and printersharing for microsoft networks"
you have to unbind TCP/IP from network clients and services
that means : "client for microsoft networks" and "file and
printersharing for microsoftnetworks" should be unchecked.
So network adapter should be bound to both tcp/ip for access to internet
and to netbeui for file and printersharing.
But as i said, it has been a while that i installed it, so if it does
not work i should look step by step how i installed my network.
