Short version of story:
I have an old PC with Windows ME. Stopped using it about three years ago cos
it has a problem. Decided to try and start it up to retrieve some old
photo's etc from it.
When started up, it does its thing, and ends up on the Windows screen with
an error message with EXPLORER at the top. Choice is to either IGNORE or
CLOSE. Ignore does nothing, close just restarts the windows screen and I get
the same message.
Tried Starting up with Restore CD so I can get to DOS, but not really sure
where to go from there.
As you can tell, not really very computer literate to say the least, so be
gentle with me!! |

First course of action is to try starting in Safe Mode and run System
Restore :-
How to boot into Safe Mode? - by holding down or 'stabbing at' either the
Shift, Ctrl or the F8 keys during a 'power-up'. (You *may* need a couple of
attempts to get the timing right). Follow any screen prompts - if offered.
Let the boot process continue until the "Help Console" eventually appears
and settles, this will give you a direct link to System Restore (half-way
down the page). Roll-back to the last time/date when things were running
normally. Re-boot into Normal Mode and see if that has fixed things.

Tried that, but once at HELP in safe mode... the mouse wont work!!

Try a ps/2 or serial mouse - or better still, use your Tab key to navigate
through the page until you reach the System Restore option and then use the
Return key etc.

a scanreg /restore?
May not go back far enough, or (as it is only a limited restore) may not be
restoring all the necessary files. Try System Restore again.
The only other 'worry' I have is just what affect your partial restore using
your Restore CD has had. It *may* have made things worse especially if it
didn't complete.
