This machine has a consistent 40 second delay during POST before windows starts to load. This is not normal as I usually see less than 10 seconds delay in other computers. Included for info: autoexec.bat SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D3 T4 LH C:\WINDOWS\AU30DOS.COM Set tvdumpflags=8 config.sys numlock = off What are usual causes of a long delay here, and a fix? ms >> Stay informed about: Long delay during POST

However, since POST is an acronym for power on self test, I'd guess it is having a problem determining if hardware and/or RAM are functioning properly or even detecting same. Fix? Gotta determine the cause - as opposed to symptom - of the problem first. IOW, take out all hardware possible - including extra RAM sticks and drives, etc. - and see if it improves. Just because 40 seconds is not normal for "other computers" does not make it not normal for the machine in front of you. Put in another drive, install Windows, test. Then again, those sound drivers may be taking a few seconds to load things up. Try disabling Autoexec.bat and Config.sys using MSCONFIG. Any change? -- Gary S. I will enable config.sys again, as I need numlock = off. Regarding autoexec.bat, I know W98SE does not need it, if I just put in a empty autoexec.bat, the question: I notice with it disabled, I still have the sound icon in the System Tray, I still have everything normal in Multimedia in Control Panel. As PCR mentioned, those audio entries in autoexec.bat are for sound in a DOS session (not a DOS box in Windows) such as when playing a DOS game. They would be better put into a dosstart.bat file if you really needed them for that. I have always set NUMLOCK to ON in the BIOS setup, on desktop computers. If you don't turn NUMLOCK on, how do you utilise your numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard? To allow "sound" when running "DOS programs". As far as the lines; SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D3 T4 Set tvdumpflags=8 those may be used in Windows also. Either way there is no significant time delay in those two SET commands.
