Gateway Essential 733c with ME bought 2/2/2001 AC-LInk 3d Game Audio. Have
Acer LCD Monitor with built in speakers. 2nd computer.

Lost sound two days ago. Uninstalled and reinstalled the AC-Link and got
sound back. Now have essentially two problems, one minor: one major.

1. There is no volume icon in the tray.

Show icon is checked, but greyed in volume control. I can get to volume
control through Accessories and have speaker volume control on the monitor,
so that is not a major problem. Just bugs my wife when she uses this computer
to play on line and has to push buttons to control volume.

2. My microphone is always on and unless I have it turned off at the mike or
muted in the volume control, I get playback through the speakers. Not sure
what is going on.

Have tried both AC-LInk and Gateway ICH Audio for audio and sound recording
with same results.

Any ideas?

Volume control icon.
Try reinstalling the audio drivers for your sound card/sound chip.

Microphone
Do you have Microsoft Office installed? Is speech recognition enabled? I
can't remember the details but seem to think that the problem might be
related. Google will perhaps be able to help.

Mike, thanks for comeback.

Read your directions in others posts first. Have tried the remove AC-Link in
Safe Mode and reboot and reinstall audio drivers and the results were the
same. Even used a fresh download of the drivers from GW, in case mine were
currupted. Should have mentioned that sooner.

My ME install would probably be called bare. Had a problem with Norton's
last year and had to do a clean reinstall. Luckily had moved all important
things to the new computer. Didn't put anything on unless I needed it to
connect to the Internet or keep the computer running. So no Office, Outlook,
voice recognition, or any of that stuff.

Will try Google. If I find an answer, will post.

Again, thanks.

Did Google search as Mike suggested. "Windows Millinium Edition microphone
always on"
One result was Forums.TechGuy.org. Went there and they had several postings
about micrphone problems. In one thread there contained a discussion about
mute/no mute of microphone in volume control. One person always muted and one
never muted.
Went into VC and checked mute under microphone.
MIcrophone works for Sound Recorder and Messenger and it doesn't play back
through the speakers.
I have no idea what is going on; but if it works, don't fix it.

Again , thanks for help.

Thanks for the feedback. All very odd indeed. The problem I was thinking
of however was one specific to having MS Office installed and speech
recognition enabled and since you don't have Office on that PC then
clearly that isn't the problem. I'm pleased to read that you seem to have
found a workable solution for one of your problems but I was sorry to read
that reinstalling your audio drivers didn't restore the volume control
icon to the system tray area.
