In my experience, the problem with registry cleaning programs is that each
one seems to find something different to that found by the next one both as
regards what the error is and how many there are.
I have tried "Registry Mechanic" (versions 5.0 and 5.2), "Windows Registry
Repair Pro", "Easy Cleaner", and several others whose names I have forgotten
but none of these has ever agreed with the others as to how many and what
errors they have found. I have, also, used "Regedit" to manually clean the
registry.
At the moment, I have several registry cleaning programs on my computer that
I am trialling in the hope of finding out which is the best and, so far, it
seems to be "Registry Mechanic V5.2".
The largest number of errors was found, a few days ago, by "Registry
Mechanic Version 5.2" - a total of 524. The other programs reported numbers
between 30 and 150. The question is, has "Registry Mechanic" found genuine
errors? Well, a quick check, of the registry, against some of the errors
reported, showed that they were, in fact, there but I haven't checked all
524!
The problem I have had with my computer, many times in the past, is that it
starts to slow down as it goes through the, now, long, long registry.
Checking the registry manually, I find references to programs and shortcuts,
etc., that I uninstalled or deleted many months, if not years, ago.
As far as I understand it, the registry is supposed to keep track of all
software and hardware installed as well as all shortcuts, printer details,
user preferences and anything else that you might want to find. But it doesn't
seem to be all that good at keeping track of the changes that are made when,
for instance, software programs are uninstalled.
You may well know more than I do, regarding the registry, so I apologise if
it appears that I'm talking down to you but I was interested in your email
because what you want to know is exactly the same as I want to know!
A final note, in all the years (probably only about four!) that I have been
using a registry cleaner, I have never had a problem using the programs.
I hope this is some help and, should you find out which is the best and
safest program to use, I would be very pleased to hear as it would save me
doing my own research!
Best of luck,
John
