Post subject: dns setup
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>dns (more info?)

When I setup windows 2000 server, I use domain name as "xxxxxx.com" (x
is letter). Now, we found that this name has registered by other
people.
Now, we got problems: the server as well as clien computers continue
to attempt to update the xxxxxx.com DNS server outside.
We can change the domain name to "xxxxxx.local" to solve the problem.
But is there any other way to configure the win2000 server, to keep
the DNS inside our LAN, not go to outside?
Our LAN has one server and ~10 client computers, have internet access
through a router.

Thank you for your help.

Richie.

Domain renames are not possible with Windows 2000 domains. Before you could
even consider a rename, you will have to upgrade all DCs to Windows Server
2003, then change the Forest to Windows Server 2003 Functioanl level.

The Server should already have DNS installed and have a zone for the AD
domain, so all you need to do is make sure the server and the clients point
only to the server's address for DNS. If you don't have a second DC, you
cannot have an Alternate DNS server address. Never use a router, ISP or
other external DNS in any position.

If so, can I still have internet access?
Thank you very much for your help.

Absolutely. You can leave it as it is or you can configure a forwarder to
your ISP's DNS (which is recommended). If you are not sure how to configure
a forwarder, see this article:

It actually didn't work for me either when simply clicking on it. The line
wrap is truncating the end of the URL after the "dns-split" part. This may
be caused by either your newsreader or Jonathan's newsreader and the way it
is posting it. No problem - you will need to simply manually copy and paste
the two lines together.

Try this:
http://homepages.tesco.net./~J.deBoynePollard/FGA/dns-split-horizon.html
URL:http://homepages.tesco.net./~J.deBoynePollard/FGA/dns-split-horizon-common-server-names.html
