Post subject: time to demote a dc on a site
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>active_directory (more info?)

hello

i have 2 dc on my first site (the main site) , and one who hold all the
roles,

i have a other site, where i have a other DC
this site is connected to my main site with a global vpn 1Mo/s

i already demote Dc but on the same site, so my two questions are

1) what is the exactly process of the demote operation (can i have a process
paper)

- does it contact the server who hold a special role ...etc ...

2) how many time could it take for the DC on my 2nd site to be demote, or
how can i calculate it

because i have user who are connected to my main site with TSE, and they
must be connected all the time between 8H to 12H and 13 to 17 H

thanks

nt

1) Run dcpromo.exe
2) The DC becomes unavailable right away

Dear Customer,

Thank you for posting in newsgroup.

According to the post, your want to know the process of demotion domain
controller and the best time to demote it. You also concern how to
calculate the time when the domain controller in remote site is considered
to be demoted.

Based on the experience, here is some information which may be helpful for
you.

Analysis and Suggestion:
=======================

1. For you concern about the process of demotion operation, you may refer
to "Process: Removing Active Directory" in the following link:

Active Directory Product Operations Guide
Chapter 3 - Detailed Maintenance Actions

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/cits/mo/winsrvmg/adpog
/adpog3.mspx#E3HAE

Please note: During the demotion process, the Active Directory Installation
Wizard will attempt to transfer any remaining operations master roles to
other domain controllers without any user interaction. The wizard transfers
the roles to any available domain controller and does not indicate which
domain controller hosts them.

2. Because the demotion process will perform a Active Directory replication
between domain controllers between the two sites, and the time is
determined by the size of Active Directory and the performance of the WAN
Link speed. It is not easy to calculate the time when the domain controller
is to be demoted in the second remote site, which is connected to the main
site with WAN Slow Link. By the way, the demotion process between sites
will cost lots of bandwidth of WAN link, so it's recommend you not to
perform the demotion operation during the period of high network
utilization.

Hope the issue will be resolved soon. I'm looking forward to your reply.

Thanks for your time.

Dear Customer,

For the technical article about Active Directory Product Operations Guide
(Chapter 3 - Detailed Maintenance Actions), please try with the following
link:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/cits/mo/winsrvmg/adpog
/adpog3.mspx#E3HAE

(The URL starts from "http" and ends with "E3HAE". Please put them in one
line.)

Hope it helps. Thanks!
