We have 2 domains - each one in it's own forest. Is it possible with
Windows 2000 to create a trust between them, or is this only allowed
in 2003? We are looking to combine our 2 domains and are just now
going through the long list of avoidable pitfalls.

thank you in advance.

Yes you can create a trust between 2 Win 2k domains.

Look into ADMT to migrate users from one domain to the other.

No, EXTERNAL Trusts are available to both types of Domains/Forests.

External trusts work (only) OUTSIDE (externally to) the Forest and
are useful for trusting both NT domains or Win2000+ domains in other
forests.

Forest level trusts are however specific to Win2003 Forests (and require
the entire forest to be at Win2003 Forest Functional Level.)

You cannot actually "combine" 2 domains but you can use the trust to
share resources OR to effect a migration from one domain into the other.

Look up "EXTERNAL Trust" -- e.g., Google:

[ "EXTERNAL Trust" 2000 site:microsoft.com ]

If you intend to migrate then also add "ADMT" to the search (i.e., Active
Directory Migration tool -- a free download from MS.)
